Real Madrid welcome Marco Asensio back into their squad for the upcoming Champions League knockout stages.

The Spaniard has not featured this season after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in the summer and, as a result, was left out of Madrid’s initial Champions League squad. But with Asensio expected to return to action soon, he finds himself back in contention ahead of the knockout stages.

Champions League 2019/20: Five things to know about Real Madrid…

  • Domestic league position: 1st, La Liga
  • Champions League finish in 2018/19: Last-16
  • 2019/20 Group finish: 2nd (11 points), Group A
  • Top scorer: Karim Benzema & Rodrygo (4)
  • Most assists: Marcelo (3)

Even without the return of Asensio, Real Madrid’s squad is a star-filled one that will be eager to win the Champions League back from Liverpool – having won three in a row before last season. Los Blancos overcame an underwhelming start both domestically and in the Champions League to put themselves in a strong position ahead of a challenging second half of the season, in which they currently find themselves top of La Liga.

Zinedine Zidane’s men face a tough battle to win the league, with Barcelona three points behind, but they are unbeaten in 2020 so far in a run that includes a Spanish Super Cup win over Atletico Madrid and a league victory over their local rivals as well.

Despite this positive start to 2020, the Champions League last-16 draw hasn’t been too kind on them, with Los Blancos facing Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City as a result of not winning their group.

City are not the team they were last season, being some way off Premier League champions-elect Liverpool, but that could work against Real Madrid as Guardiola’s side may put more of an effort into the Champions League.
