Real Madrid welcome Atlético Madrid for their 223rd derby meeting this Saturday afternoon.

Atleti and Real also met earlier this month, when Zinedine Zidane’s men triumphed on penalties to win the Supercopa de España.

The two La Liga giants’ domestic form couldn’t be any different. Los Blancos lead the Spanish championship while Atleti are on a two-match winless streak heading into the lion’s den.

Ones to watch

Real Madrid: Toni Kroos

Toni Kroos has registered three assists this week; one came against Real Valladolid in La Liga last Sunday and he added another two in the midweek cup thrashing of Zaragoza. Zidane will be hoping he can pull the strings in midfield, alongside Luka Modric, so that Real can control the tempo in what should be a heated derby.

Key stat: Toni Kroos is the only La Liga player who has completed 1,000+ successful passes (1,271) and created 40+ chances (45).

Atletico Madrid: Ángel Correa

Atletico have been struggling in front of goal of late. This, coupled with Real’s great defensive record, could spell trouble for Simeone’s men, so the onus is on the few attack-minded individuals he’s likely to deploy. One of those is Ángel Correa, who popped up with a few key goals around Christmas before the winter break. His two efforts across all competitions during January amounts to half the total number of goals Atletico have managed in six games in 2020.

Key stat: Ángel Correa has created more goals than any Atletico Madrid player in La Liga this season (5).

Confirmed Real Madrid line-up:

4-3-2-1: Courtois; Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Mendy; Valverde, Casemiro, Kroos; Isco, Modric; Benzema

Squawka prediction

Atletico will need to dig deep if they are to get something from this game. But, as the saying often goes, form goes straight out of the window regarding a derby. However, their recent struggles could be exploited by a Real side that is starting to hit its stride. Games between these city rivals have been close of late and we don’t expect anything less albeit the hosts to edge out a hard-fought battle.

Scoreline prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Atletico Madrid
