West Ham continue their pre-season with an away trip to Championship club Reading, where they will take to the turf of the recently rebranded Select Car Leasing Stadium on Wednesday at 7pm (UK time).

David Moyes’ men have returned to England following a short training camp in Scotland and they will now be put through their paces in Berkshire, clocking up valuable minutes ahead of a club-defining season in which they learn their Europa League group-stage fate on August 27.

Reading vs West Ham build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

After a barnstorming start to last season, in which the Royals won seven of their opening eight Championship games under former Chicago Fire manager Veljko Paunovic, the Berkshire club blinked and ultimately fell out of the promotion race, finishing a single place outside of the play-off spots. The Serbian coach will be aiming to elevate his side this term and a test against European greenhorns will be the perfect warm-up to get his charges fired up for 2021/22.

For the Hammers they are fighting on four fronts this upcoming season, adding the Europa League to their domestic obligations, and Moyes will be keen to ensure his side are fully up to speed when the new Premier League season kickstarts in less than a month. The east Londoners face yet another curtain-raiser against Newcastle, a carbon copy of last season, and Moyes will be using this game against Reading to guarantee his side are fit and firing on all cylinders.

  • West Ham (vs Leyton Orient): Randolph; Ashby, Baptiste, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Johnson; Noble, Ekwah, Oko-Flex; Antonio, Silva.

Lukasz Fabianski, Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma all returned to training at Rush Green this week following extended breaks owing to international football. Winston Reid meanwhile is at the Tokyo Olympic Games with New Zealand, while Euro 2020 stars Declan Rice, Vladimir Coufal, Tomas Soucek and Andriy Yarmolenko remain on holiday, earning a well-deserved break.

West Ham’s pre-season so far

West Ham began their pre-season with a short five-day training camp in St Andrews, Scotland, with Moyes taking his players to his homeland for the second successive summer. That ephemeral stint north of the border saw the Hammers take on Scottish Premiership club Dundee at Dens Park, in which the Premier League side came from two goals down to draw 2-2, with goals from highly-regarded academy graduate Jamal Baptiste and Jarrod Bowen.

The Londoners returned to more familiar pastures last week, taking part in a pre-season double-header against Leyton Orient and Northampton Town on Tuesday. Both matches kicked off at the same time and West Ham’s new first-team coach Billy McKinlay was entrusted to oversee matters against the Cobblers.

Moyes meanwhile was present at Brisbane Road against Kenny Jackett’s side as the Hammers played out a goalless draw against their east London counterparts. McKinlay meanwhile, who has replaced Moyes’ former lieutenant Alan Irvine in the dugout, completed a 2-1 win alongside Stuart Pearce against Northampton.

Next up for the Hammers is their showdown with Reading, before the club embark on three testing fixtures to really put the players through the wringer, with an away trip to Celtic preceding friendlies against newly-promoted Premier League side Brentford and Champions League regulars Atalanta.
