Reading team news

The Royals are about to embark on their 10th season in the Championship after relegation in 2012/13 and will be hoping for a more comfortable campaign having narrowly avoided relegation in May. Had Derby County not been deducted 21 points, Reading would have been in the drop zone (even if they weren’t deducted six points themselves), finishing just four points clear of 22nd-placed Peterborough and seven ahead of the Rams.

Paul Ince took over as Reading manager in February and is about to embark on his first full season as Royals boss and he made son Tom Ince his first signing, later joined by John Clarke, Michael Craig and Dean Bouzanis. Reading won their first game of pre-season against Colchester United and have four more matches after his before they open their Championship campaign away to Blackpool at the end of this month.

Benfica team news

Benfica, meanwhile, will be hoping to close the gap on the Primeira Liga’s top two having finished third last season – nine points behind second-placed Sporting CP and 17 off title winners Porto. They haven’t had ideal preparation though, losing star striker Darwin Nunez to Liverpool while also offloading Everton, Gedson Fernandes and Jota.

David Neres, Enzo Fernandez, Alexander Bah, Mihailo Ristic and Peter Musa have all been brought in, but Benfica may feel the need to do more business ahead of the new Primeira Liga campaign.

Scoreline prediction: Reading 1-2 Benfica
