Red Bull Salzburg and Ajax meet in a pre-season friendly on Tuesday at the Saalfelden Arena (5.30pm kick-off, UK time).
They are two of Europe’s biggest producers of talent with their respective academies housing and developing some of the brightest stars in the game right now, while a fruitful scouting network for both clubs has also allowed them to identify and unearth countless hidden gems, eight of whom have flown the nest this summer.
Salzburg have once again endured their annual plunder, losing Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen to Leeds, while Dortmund spent £32.1m to sign Karim Adeyemi and Europa League winners Frankfurt also picked up Jerome Onguene. Ajax meanwhile have lost Noussair Mazraoui, Ryan Gravenberch, Andre Onana and Lisandro Martinez.
Four key men for both outfits lost in another summer spending spree executed by the elite clubs in Salzburg and Amsterdam. They will now look to rebuild once again this summer, and their respective pre-season preparations have brought them together this week.

Red Bull Salzburg’s talent factory
Ajax has long been established as one of the pre-eminent academy clubs, being responsible for the emergences of Clarence Seedorf, Rafael van der Vaart, Wesley Sneijder among others, while their shrewd recruitment policy has seen them sign some of the best hidden talents in the game, only to sell on for enormous profit.
Salzburg, likewise, have started to enter the conversation in recent years and are now being talked about in a similar breath. The Austrian outfit has cultivated a burgeoning reputation as one of modern football’s most-celebrated talent factories, with some of the game’s biggest current stars having plied their trade in Salzburg at one stage.
Their list of former players is seriously impressive, with the likes of Sadio Mane, Erling Haaland and Karim Adeyemi having all strut their stuff at the Red Bull Arena at some stage in their careers, and all three were once again on the move this summer for serious money, joining Bayern Munich, Man City and Dortmund respectively.
The likes of Naby Keita, Marcel Sabitzer, Dominik Szoboszlai, Konrad Laimer, Dayot Upamecano and Peter Gulacsi have all also turned out for Die Roten Bullen, giving the club one of the most revered alumni in the sport today.
And there are certainly plenty of players still developing at the club, the next wave of superstars, with Nicolas Seiwald, Benjamin Sesko and Chukwubuike Adamu all tipped for the highest of heights. It certainly won’t be long before Europe’s leading lights start circling once again.
Scoreline prediction: Red Bull Salzburg 2-3 Ajax
