Southampton continue their pre-season preparations on Saturday when they face Ralph Hasenhuttl’s former side RB Leipzig at 1pm (UK time).

The Austrian entered the summer with his future in doubt and he is favourite to be the first Premier League manager sacked in 2022/23, but he will be looking to build some form of momentum with their first friendly. Leipzig, meanwhile, are preparing for their first full season under Domenico Tedesco.

RB Leipzig team news

RB Leipzig have had a busy summer in the transfer window but perhaps not in the way their fans would want, with 12 outgoings and just two incomings – signing Janis Blaswich and Xaver Schlager. But the biggest deal for RB Leipzig, and one that will make their summer, was the securing of Christopher Nkunku on a two-year extension, keeping him with the club until 2022.

The Frenchman entered the summer off the back of an excellent Bundesliga campaign, scoring 20 goals and providing 13 assists, and had been heavily linked with a move away from Leipzig. But he remains for now, and recently revealed signing a new deal wasn’t a hard decision.

“For me it was a given to extend my contract here. I feel right at home in this city and at this club,” he told reporters.

“I still don’t see my work here as finished. So I’m not thinking about leaving the club next year either. We did really well as a team last season but there’s still more to come.

“I want to continue the success with RB Leipzig.”

Southampton team news

After fighting relegation last season, Southampton are working hard to recruit in the off-season and have already added five new names to their first-team squad. Two arrivals have come from Manchester City in goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu and midfielder Romeo Lavia on permanent deals, though the Premier League champions do have buyback clauses for both players.

Also arriving have been centre-back Armel Bella-Kotchap, midfielder Joe Aribo and goalkeeper Mateusz Lis, bringing strength in depth in key positions.

Scoreline prediction: RB Leipzig 2-2 Southampton
