Celtic kicked off played their preseason opener on July 6 in Austria, with a friendly against Austrian side Wiener Viktoria. Celtic came away from that contest emphatic winners, putting the ball in the net a whopping six times in the first 45 minutes, and cruising to a 7-0 win. Impressively, Celtic showed some depth in their attack (admittedly against subpar competition), and their seven goals were scored by six different players (with Johny Kenny netting twice).

The Bhoys are back in action late Saturday afternoon, again in Austria, this time at the Allianz Stadion, against Rapid Vienna. Unlike Celtic, who, prior to that July 6 friendly hadn’t taken the pitch since May 14 in their final Scottish Premiership’s Championship Group match against Motherwell (a 6-0 win), Rapid Vienna have had virtually no break in recent months. Five days after wrapping up their Austrian Bundesliga Championship Group matches on May 21, Rapid had to play a two-legged playoff tie against fellow Austrian side Tirol for a spot in next season’s UEFA Conference League. After winning 4-1 over the two legs, the side had roughly three weeks off before kicking off their preseason friendly slate with four matches in 12 days (three against Austrian opposition, and the most recent against Cypriot side AEK Larnaca) between June 21 and July 2.

Given the results of Celtics last two outings – a combined 13-0 over two matches some 53 days apart – we can reasonably assume that the Scottish giants are well rested and in form, and not suffering from any sort of rust. Their Austrian counterparts, meanwhile, have won just two of their four preseason friendlies thus far, and have conceded seven times.

While Rapid Vienna will certainly represent a step up in competition compared to Wiener Viktoria, there’s little to suggest that Celtic will have much difficulty creating or converting chances.
