Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has dismissed reports linking striker Alfredo Morelos with a move away from Ibrox.

The 23-year-old has been in stunning form for Rangers this season, scoring 20 goals in all competitions having overcome a slow start to life in Scotland in 2017.

But his future was thrown into doubt recently after the 23-year-old gave an interview in his native Colombia refusing to rule out a move to a “better and more competitive league”.

Will Morelos leave Rangers in January? Five things to know…

  • Morelos has scored 20 goals across all competitions for Rangers this season.
  • The 23-year-old has been linked with a move away from the club in January.
  • Morelos recently refused to rule out leaving for a “better and more competitive league”.
  • But Gerrard revealed he is 100% sure Morelos will not leave Rangers.
  • Gerrard also insisted Morelos is at a big club in Rangers.

“So far there is nothing official,” he told Blu Radio.

“There is a lot of speculation of teams things I’ve read on Twitter and stuff, but there’s been nothing concrete, but if there is then I will let you know.

“I just need to continue doing things to the best of my ability and we will see now in the winter transfer window if there’s the chance to make a bigger move, to a much better and more competitive league.

“It would be good for me to keep improving, both for my game and my statistics to keep doing things the best I can.”

But if Rangers manager Gerrard has his way, the Colombian striker will not be leaving the club in the January transfer window.

“I’m not confident, I’m sure,” he replied when asked how confident he is in keeping Morelos.

“I’m 100% sure he is not going anywhere.”

Gerrard was speaking after seeing his side beat Hearts 3-0 to reach the Scottish League Cup final, setting up a tie with bitter rivals Celtic next month, with Morelos scoring twice.

The final appearance adds to an impressive start to Gerrard’s second season as a manager, with Rangers also sitting second in the Scottish Premiership and in a comfortable position in their Europa League group.

Gerrard: Morelos is at a big club

On top of confirming Morelos’ future at Rangers, Gerrard went on to praise the Colombian for his hard work in the first part of the season and growth as a player.

The former Liverpool captain also alluded to Morelos being at a “big club”, potentially as a reaction to the forward’s recent remarks.

“We are running out of things to say about him as he has been first-class,” Gerrard said.

“He worked ever-so hard in pre-season to get himself fit, sharp and in good condition.

“He loves it. He works hard, he is listening, he is growing and he is enjoying himself and he is at a big club doing his stuff and that is what number nines should do.”
