Last year’s Australian Open saw Rafael Nadal win his first Grand Slam in almost two years since the 2020 French Open – a tournament he wins more than he loses. It also brought an end to the Spaniard’s 13-year wait for a second Australian Open title, with his only previous victory coming in 2009.
Another French Open title followed in 2022 but injury stopped his tournament at Wimbledon despite having reached the semi-finals, while a fourth-round exit to Frances Tiafoe was his only loss at a Grand Slam in 2022. But now he is back and looking to win consecutive Australian Opens, coming into the tournament as the number one seed. In his first round match, Nadal beat Brit Jack Draper in four sets, winning 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Mackenzie McDonald was made to work hard for his spot in the second round of the Australian Open and it is often at this stage that he bows out. In his five previous appearances at the Australian Open, McDonald has lost in the second round on three occasions. The other two occasions brought a first-round exit and a run to the fourth round in 2021, his joint-best finish at a Grand Slam.
In the first round of the 2023 Australian Open, McDonald was pit against fellow American Brandon Nakashima in a thrilling match that went to five sets with three tie-breaks. But McDonald ultimately won out, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1), 1-6, (10) 6-7, 6-4.
