A red cloud hangs over Ten Hag
While focus should be on Ajax’s attempt to win a third consecutive league and cup double under Ten Hag’s leadership, all eyes are instead on his potential next step. The vaunted Dutch tactician has been heavily linked with the soon-to-be vacant Manchester United managerial job, with reports suggesting he’s agreed to become the Red Devils‘ fifth permanent head coach following Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure nearly a decade ago.
So far Ten Hag hasn’t publicly discussed what the future may bring, his present deal in Amsterdam expires summer 2023, but that didn’t stop De Telegraaf columnist Mike Verweij from congratulating him which led to a tetchy exchange between the pair.
Verweij: “First of all, congratulations with your move to Manchester United. Can you explain why you are keeping quiet about this?”
Ten Hag: “Because I serve Ajax. We need to win the two remaining trophies.”
Ten Hag was then asked if he was “afraid” to announce his departure, before adding: “I am not afraid. I will repeat myself one more time,” Ten Hag said. “Do you have questions about the cup final? About Ajax?”

That question was followed up by his opinion of the demands of managing a club like Manchester United, but the Ajax coach was not prepared to answer, stating: “Yeah, you can keep trying to ask me about this, but I am here to talk about Ajax.”
His skipper Dusan Tadic, though, was prepared to give his thoughts on Ten Hag and the feeling in the Ajax locker room linking him with the Old Trafford gig.
“I hope he stays, he is a great trainer,” he told reporters. “One of the best in the world. Tactically he thinks two steps ahead of the opponent. It is a pleasure to work with him.
“It is logical that there is interest in Ajax’s trainer and players. That will always be the case. That is also why we are Ajax. We also have to radiate that.”
Scoreline prediction: PSV 1-2 Ajax
