PSG team news

Given the total sense of formality around their impending league win, their brutal exit from the Champions League, and the decidedly less than warm and fuzzy vibes around individuals on the team and the club and the fans, it’s tough to build a compelling case that PSG are actually playing for anything these days.

And yet, sometimes, raw talent is enough to carry the day.

Although fans have turned on two thirds of what was supposed to be football’s deadliest trident, while the third – reportedly, presumably – is contemplating relocation to Madrid. And though the ultras are threatening a boycott that could cast an even more awkward shadow over proceedings, any lineup that Mauricio Pochettino puts out is going to trump that of just about any opponent. Granted, second-placed Marseille aren’t just a run-of-the-mill Ligue 1 side. But the gap in quality between them and PSG is profound, and it’s likely to show here.

PSG predicted XI: Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Kimpembe, Mendes; Gueye, Danilo, Verratti; Messi, Mbappe, Neymar

Marseille team news

Marseille, though not exactly imperious, travel to Paris in the midst of a fantastic run of results. Les Olympiens are finishing their campaign emphatically, with wins in eight straight games in all competitions, and just one loss in their last 11.

Unlike their hosts, Marseille are still playing European football, having secured a place at midweek in the semifinal of the Europa Conference League, in Greece against PAOK. Their first semifinal leg against Feyenoord is scheduled for April 28, in Holland. Domestically, meanwhile, Marseille are trying to hold off an impressive Rennes side that’s impressed all season, and are currently three points behind them. A victory on Sunday night would put Marseille six points clear with six games to play and all but lockup second place in Ligue 1, and the division’s second and final automatic Champions League qualification spot.

Unfortunately, the Marseille attack will be without second-leading scorer Arkadiusz Milic. His absence will put pressure on top scorer Dimitri Payet (10 goals) and Bamba Dieng (6 goals) to pick up the slack. Against a majority of Ligue 1 teams, that’s not too tall order. Against PSG – even a completely embattled PSG – that may be too much to overcome.

Marseille predicted XI: Mandanda; Rongier, Saliba, Caleta-Car, Peres; Guendouzi, Kamara, Gerson; Under, Dieng, Payet
