Atletico Madrid vs Valencia Stats

  • Atletico Madrid have avoided defeat in their last 14 La Liga games against Valencia (W8 D6), since a 3-1 defeat at Mestalla in October 2014, their longest unbeaten run against them in the top-flight.
  • Valencia have failed to win in their last 12 away La Liga games against sides from Comunidad de Madrid (D2 L10), losing the last seven, and could equal their longest away run of defeats against such teams in the top-flight (eight in 1976).
  • Atletico Madrid have collected only four points of the last 18 available in La Liga (W1 D1 L4) and have suffered five defeats in 20 games this season, their highest tally at this stage of the season in a full season in the top-flight under Diego Simeone.
  • Atletico Madrid have conceded, on average, more than one goal per game this season (1.2), something that has never happened in their previous ten campaigns in the competition under Diego Simeone.
  • Valencia’s Hugo Duro has scored five goals in 17 La Liga games this season and scored his only brace in the competition in the reverse fixture this season against Atletico Madrid at Mestalla.

Atletico Madrid vs Valencia Predictions

Atletico Madrid will be rueing their lack of consistency in La Liga this season. In a campaign in which Barcelona were never likely to be a genuine title threat, this was an opportunity for los Colchoneros to battle it out with their cross-town rivals at Real, but it’s starting to look increasingly like an opportunity that’s been missed.

To make matters worse, Atleti return to league action here having lost their Super Cup semi-final to Athletic Bilbao last week before being knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Real Sociedad at Anoeta on Wednesday evening. Attention can now revert back to La Liga and remaining in the Champions League qualification spots as they currently sit in fourth place.

Valencia are one of several clubs who may feel capable of chasing down Atletico for a top four spot in the remainder of the Primera Division campaign. As things stand, los Che occupy ninth place, but just four points separate them from the top four and a run of improved form in the coming weeks and months could make the Champions League dream a possibility again.

A 4-1 hammering at the hands of league leaders Real Madrid wasn’t the ideal return to action for Jose Bordalas’ men after the winter break, though they have since picked up away wins in the Copa Del Rey versus both Cartagena and Atletico Baleares as well as a handy point in the league from a home draw with high-flying Sevilla.

The bookmakers are still expecting Atletico Madrid to be involved in low-scoring games, but Rojiblancos have conceded, on average, more than one goal per game this season (1.2). Nine of the last ten games involving Valencia in all competitions have seen both teams find the net so we’re backing the same again on Saturday night.

One man that this less confident Atleti backline will have to keep an eye on here is Portuguese attacker Gonçalo Guedes. The 26 year old is the only man in Valencia’s squad to average over 2 shots per game this season and he had five attempts at goal in the 1-1 draw with Sevilla last time out.
