Atletico Madrid will be rueing their lack of consistency in La Liga this season. In a campaign in which Barcelona were never likely to be a genuine title threat, this was an opportunity for los Colchoneros to battle it out with their cross-town rivals at Real, but it’s starting to look increasingly like an opportunity that’s been missed.
To make matters worse, Atleti return to league action here having lost their Super Cup semi-final to Athletic Bilbao last week before being knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Real Sociedad at Anoeta on Wednesday evening. Attention can now revert back to La Liga and remaining in the Champions League qualification spots as they currently sit in fourth place.
Valencia are one of several clubs who may feel capable of chasing down Atletico for a top four spot in the remainder of the Primera Division campaign.
