PFA Player of the Year: Could Kevin De Bruyne or Mohamed Salah seal record-breaking third gong in 2022/23?

Mohamed Salah claimed his second PFA Players’ Player of the Year after sealing the end-of-season gong for 2021/22.
With that personal triumph, the Liverpool superstar has now joined a highly-decorated club of players to scoop the accolade on two occasions, including Mark Hughes, Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and De Bruyne — fending off stern competition from the latter.
Across 2021/22, Salah claimed his third Premier League Golden Boot after netting 23 goals — finishing level with Son Heung-Min — while he also registered a division-high 13 assists to also scoop the Playmaker of the Season award as Liverpool finished runners-up to Man City.

De Bruyne had won the previous two seasons and was a frontrunner alongside Salah to seal end-of-season bragging rights this time around. Had he done so, then he would have become the first player in history to clinch three PFA Player of the Years. The wait now goes on.
The Belgian certainly had a good case after helping guide Pep Guardiola’s side to another Premier League title, top scoring for City (15), while also registering eight assists in 2021/22. In fact, De Bruyne is one of just three players in the history of the award to seal it in consecutive seasons, alongside Henry between 2003 and 2004, and Ronaldo between 2007 and 2008.
Ronaldo actually made the shortlist for 2021/22, so he’s certainly another name in the frame to scoop the award this time next year — and potentially claim that record-breaking third award.
Before a ball has even been kicked for 2022/23, who are the early frontrunners for next season’s highly-coveted accolade?
