Who is the Premier League’s best goalkeeper? We asked a fan of each ‘big six’ club

The Premier League is home to some outstanding goalkeepers. A gameweek does not go by without fans witnessing some superb saves or increasingly audacious pieces of footwork.

But the debate in regards to who deserves to be labelled the best shot-stopper in the division is far from cut and dry. Football is a game of opinions and plenty of fans are divided on which goalkeeper is head and shoulders above the competition.

Who is worthy of a place at the top of the goalkeeping pecking order? We asked a fan of each ‘big six’ club to find out….

Manchester City Fan

James Iberson-Hurst: Even with the departure of Thibaut Courtois to LaLiga over the summer, the Premier League leads the way in terms of the standard of those between the sticks, with Ederson and Alisson neck-and-neck in my race for the top spot.

Their combined shot-stopping ability and distribution is unrivalled as a complete package, and the fact they have only conceded a combined total of 10 goals (five apiece) in 24 games so far this season is a pretty decent indication of their prowess.

Liverpool Fan

Neil Perry: David De Gea has been the best for several years, and there is no coincidence his drop in form has sent United tumbling down the league.

Other than him I have always rated Kasper Schmeichel. To be able to step out of the shadow of his dad and perform so well – and so often – you have to praise him for that. It amazes me he hasn’t ended up at a Champions League club.

Chelsea Fan

Jamie Collett: Ederson of Manchester City ticks every box a top-class goalkeeper needs and is the league’s outstanding man between the sticks. Despite playing in a team where he is rarely called into action, the Brazilian’s distribution makes him an enormous asset for Pep Guardiola, while his goalkeeping is usually first class when required. Having seen him at Stamford Bridge during his early days with City, there was an aura about Ederson which the top goalkeepers all possess.

Spurs Fan

Steve Jennings: David De Gea is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League. Alisson has been excellent for Liverpool, Ederson is outstanding with his feet, and Hugo Lloris is still far better than most people give him credit for, despite the mistakes. But De Gea still has those matches where he looks absolutely unbeatable from time to time.

He hasn’t been helped by the defenders in front of him so far this term. Put him at any other top-six team and he’d have the most clean sheets in England so far this season. Manchester United fans must be thanking their lucky stars Real Madrid signed Thibaut Courtois in the summer.

Arsenal Fan

Linus Morris: It’s got to be David De Gea, hasn’t it? He might not be in the form of last season but the guy is almost superhuman on his day. It’s also quite annoying that he’s so good because it makes Jose Mourinho look better than he is and that is very annoying indeed. At the Emirates last season, we did that thing where we gifted Manchester United silly goals and had 17 million attempts on goal. I’m not sure what De Gea was playing at but it may have been the best goalkeeping performance I’ve witnessed at the Emirates.

Manchester United Fan

John Wilde: Being a United fan I really should go for David De Gea and the reasons are pretty obvious – just look at his record over the last few years. Winning the club’s Player of the Year award four years in a row tells its own story.

But let’s give an honourable mention to someone else away from the big boys too – there is no denying that Martin Dubravka has been an excellent signing since joining Newcastle club in January.
