Ones to watch
Real Madrid: Alphonse Areola
Real Madrid have the best defensive record in La Liga, and that owes a lot to Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian has been brilliant and for the last three months has been as good as any shot-stopper in the world. But it’s the Copa, so he will be sat on the sidelines and it will be so interesting to see whether Madrid’s defensive solidity (the core of their identity this season) can continue with Alphonse Areola in place of Courtois in goal. The Frenchman is a fabulous ‘keeper on his day and will be wanting to make a name for himself.
Key stat: Alphonse Areola has won all six games that he has started this season, conceding five goals in the process.
Real Sociedad: Martin Odegaard
The young Norwegian is on loan from Real Madrid and is having an absolutely sensational season in the north of Spain. Odegaard has turned his career around after his early failure at Madrid is now a forgotten memory.
Key stat: No Madrid or Sociedad player has created more chances than Martin Odegaard (47) in La Liga this season.
Madrid find themselves with an almost full bill of health. Obviously Marco Asensio is still out injured and Eden Hazard is also yet to return but they are joined on the sidelines by Dani Carvajal, Mariano, Casemiro and Lucas Vazquez, all of whom have not been named in the 19-man squad. Gareth Bale remains out of favour and is also not in the squad.

La Real have been without Asier Illarramendi all season and won’t be able to call on veteran David Zurutuza or key centre-back Diego Llorente either. However they did manage to rest Odegaard and Mikel Oyarzabal this weekend ahead of the match with Madrid, and striker Alexander Isak has scored five goals in his last four games.
Confirmed XI: Remiro; Gorosabel, Aritz, Le Normand, Monreal, Zubeldia, Merino, Odegaard, Oyarzabal, Januzaj, Isak.
La Real are an exciting, vibrant side. They play great football moving up the pitch with quality and confidence. In Odegaard, they have one of La Liga’s outstanding players this season and they are perfectly set up to either dominate possession or hit Madrid on the break. Of course, none of that matters because Los Blancos are in the zone right now. Their defence is locked into an impenetrable rhythm and they are just finding a variety of ways to score. Expect Sociedad to boss the game but Madrid to win the day.
