Manchester United will be looking to get their season back on track when they welcome Aston Villa to Old Trafford on Sunday.

The Red Devils have been underwhelming this season and failed to win their past two games, including the 2-1 defeat at Astana on Thursday, albeit with a rotated squad.

There have been some murmurings surrounding the security of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the Man Utd helm, but the Norwegian seems safe for now. His opponent Dean Smith also appears to be enjoying the backing of his board, recently signing a new contract with Aston Villa.

It came after the Villans beat Newcastle 2-0 on Monday evening, ending a mini poor run of form that saw them slipping closer to the relegation zone.

Read on for our Man Utd vs Aston Villa preview, predictions, team news and TV coverage information.

Ones to watch

Man Utd: Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford

Some believe Marcus Rashford has not been a good enough goalscorer for Man Utd this season but he has been keeping pace with some of the Premier League’s best forwards.

Rashford’s seven goals has him level with Tottenham Hotspur striker and England teammate Harry Kane, though he has played 54 more minutes. The 22-year-old is also one goal behind Raheem Sterling, who moved onto eight in Man City’s game with Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

And the Guardian’s Jamie Jackson, speaking on Squawka’s Premier League Preview, believes Rashford could take inspiration from Sterling.

“I’d say Sterling is a really good inspiration for him because I didn’t think it was going to happen for Sterling at City and it has totally now,” he said.

“And Rashford, as we keep on saying, he’s still very young and he’s got all those appearances.”

Key stat: Marcus Rashford has scored 36.8% of Manchester United’s Premier League goals this season.

Aston Villa: Conor Hourihane

While Jack Grealish, deservedly, received the plaudits for Aston Villa’s win over Newcastle on Monday night the influence of Conor Hourihane should not be overlooked.

The Irishman has struggled for game time this season, only starting five of Aston Villa’s 13 Premier League games so far. But against Newcastle he proved that he should be featuring more, being directly involved in both of Aston Villa’s goals.

Scoring the first with a nice curling effort from a free-kick, Hourihane added an assist from a similar position, crossing the ball into the box for Anwar El Ghazi to score. If Aston Villa are to cause Man Utd problems, Hourihane’s delivery will be key.

Key stat: Conor Hourihane averages 0.41 goals and 0.41 assists per 90 minutes in the Premier League this season, a better record than any Aston Villa player.

Squawka prediction

Man Utd may have been shocked by Astana on Thursday but this is their first team, and Solksjaer’s men have been slowly improving.

It’s won’t be an easy one, given the recent return to winning ways for Aston Villa, but Man Utd should get the win.

Scoreline prediction: Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa
