Barcelona welcome high-flying Getafe to the Camp Nou this weekend in what should be a contrasting battle of styles.

The defending Spanish champions are in inconsistent form and find themselves three points behind arch-rivals Real Madrid for this year’s crown.

Getafe, meanwhile, are enjoying one of their best-ever league campaigns and have a real shot of qualifying for next season’s Champions League as they presently sit just behind Barça in the league table.

Ones to watch

Barcelona: Antoine Griezmann

The loss of Luis Suarez has been felt at Barcelona, who haven’t been among the goals as much as many expected. Understandably, the burden has fallen on Lionel Messi’s shoulders, and the mercurial ‘number 10’ has stepped up to an extent (even if he hasn’t scored in his last 27 shots in La Liga).

The same cannot be said for Antoine Griezmann, who has moved from the flanks into his favoured central striker position.

His latest goal in the league, which also happened to be his last overall contribution (goals or assist), came four days before Christmas Day.

When these two sides last met in September, the World Cup-winner wasn’t involved in Barça’s two goals so he’ll be looking to make amends. For now, though, it’s a case of firefighting.

Ahead of this showdown, quotes attributed to him in France Football magazine suggested that he’d not been welcomed in Barcelona’s dressing room, with Griezmann allegedly stating: “They are jealous of me for winning the 2018 World Cup.”

Representatives of the former Atleti man deny this interview ever took place and distanced himself from the comments. He will now be looking to do all the talking on the pitch.

Key stat: Antoine Griezmann hasn’t scored or assisted in his last five La Liga appearances (all of which he’s started).

Getafe: Ángel Rodríguez

Despite featuring in 20 of Getafe’s opening 23 league matches this season, Ángel Rodríguez isn’t a guaranteed starter under Pepe Bordalás. That said, he hasn’t let his manager down whenever deployed, with the veteran Spanish marksman one shy of reaching double figures.

His impressive form hasn’t gone unnoticed. Upcoming opponents Barcelona are reportedly keen to sign him on a temporary basis after being given permission by La Liga bosses to sign a player from another domestic club this month following a long-term injury for Ousmane Dembele (though La Liga’s medical body may overrule this upon reviewing the extent of Dembele’s injury).

Either way, to say Angel is interested in making such a transfer might be an understatement.

“When you are linked with a great club like Barcelona, the repercussion is greater, but since they are only rumours, I am very calm,” he said.

“If they talked with me I will have time to think about things. [It] means I am doing things right. Of course, it is something you would have to think about.”

Getafe president Angel Torres conceded they wouldn’t be able to stand in his way if Barça did offer him a deal. Rodríguez’s present contract has a €10m release clause inserted, which the five-time European champions would be able to meet.

“I could not refuse the move,” he told Catalunya Radio.

“I have a good relationship with Barcelona and I have no problem with them. They have had the misfortune of having two strikers injured.

“At this time, no one in Barcelona has spoken to me… if there was any interest I would have known, as I have a direct line with the president and with Ramón Planes.

“I have no indication that anyone can tell me… because those things are usually filtered down.

“I have told the player to be calm and keep scoring goals, which has to happen. He knows he would be the first to be made aware if there was any interest.

“Who would not like to go to Barcelona? But now there is no news or indication that they will come to sign him.

“The clause would not be a problem for them – it is €10m. We want to keep the player but additional money is always nice. I would be upset to lose the player but we are ready for any situation.”

Rodriguez’s teammate Marc Cucurella, who is on loan from Barcelona, may foresee such a transfer considering he feels his parent club lack the “patience” to promote Las Masia graduates like they once did.

“I think that at Barcelona, which is a big club, the important thing is to win in the end. Maybe they don’t have the patience that they had,” he told Spanish press.

“As a cantera (youth academy) player, which I am, they don’t give you the chances you deserve. I don’t like it because I expected they would be more confident in the youth academy. In football, the important thing is to win. Winning is more important than having patience.”

Key stat: Ángel Rodríguez has the best minutes-to-goal ratio (101.33) of any La Liga player who has scored nine or more goals.

Confirmed Barcelona line-up:

Suarez and Dembele are both missing for the visit of Getafe through injury while Clement Lenglet is out due to suspension.

Squawka prediction

Getafe will not make it easy for Barcelona. Heading into this weekend’s game, they are separated by seven points, with the Madrid-based club occupying a Champions League spot, and José Bordalás’ team currently possess the league’s third-best defensive record after Atletico Madrid and Atheltic Bilbao. That said, we can see another Messi-inspired performance to carry the reigning champions over the line.

Scoreline prediction: Barcelona 2-0 Getafe
