Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has rebutted claims the club need to add to their squad in the January transfer window.

Spurs, who were contesting in the Champions League final less than five months ago, have endured a tough start to the 2019/20 season currently sitting ninth in the Premier League table.

Do Spurs need new signings? Five things to know…

  • Tottenham Hotspur are currently ninth in the Premier League.
  • Spurs have won three, drawn two and lost three of their opening eight games.
  • The north London side are also winless in the Champions League, including a 7-2 home defeat to Bayern Munich.
  • This has led to suggestions Spurs need to freshen up in January.
  • But Mauricio Pochettino insists his current squad are good enough to turn the season around.

Pochettino’s men have lost their past two games across all competitions, conceding 10 goals in the process, recording their worst ever home defeat in a 7-2 reverse against Bayern Munich before falling 3-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion.

The poor start to the campaign has seen Pochettino’s future at Tottenham thrown into doubt, while there are also suggestions the club need to look to the transfer market to freshen a squad beginning to look a little stale.

But Pochettino disagrees, insisting the players he currently has are more than good enough to pull through.

“I don’t believe,” he told reporters when asked if he needed new signings.

“I believe in the players we have that are in Tottenham today. I respect the opinion of people who say we need to change.

“But if it is my decision, I am going to stick with the players because they have quality.

“We have great quality to fight for the things we expect to fight.”

Spurs will be looking to get their season back on track this weekend when they welcome Watford to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, with the Hornets still awaiting their first win.

Pochettino: It’s only a matter of time before things turn around

In addition to insisting there will be no need for Spurs to sign any new players in January, Pochettino also claimed Spurs’ current situation is something all clubs have to deal with.

“In this type of situation the most important thing is to be all together and show a strong face to the problems,” he added.

“Face the problems and talk a lot because the most important thing is that players feel support and trust from the manager. That belief is important. I trust 200 per cent in them and believe that they have the capacity and potential to win the games and turn this situation around.

“This type of situation happens at all clubs sooner or later. We have confidence that we have the quality. Only a matter of time to make things clear.

“We need to help them perform because they are the principal actors on the pitch who will provide the victories.”
