The once-disappointing Phillies have righted the ship since the firing of manager Joe Girardi, and now sit third in the NL East. two games over break-even, at 36-34. However, the Phils, who’ve still won 15 of their last 20 games, look to be coming down to Earth a bit, as evidenced by losses in each of last three outings, amid – more troublingly – flagging offensive output. The Phils sit a respectable 13th in MLB in Weight Runs Created (wRC+) and a downright excellent 8th in Weight On-Base Average (wOBA). Unfortunately for Philly, those rankings fall to 18th and 17th (respectively) against right-handed pitching. Even more unfortunate for Thursday night’s visitors is that they’ll be tasked with putting bat-to-ball against one of the NL’s very best right handers in Musgrove.
Meanwhile, Phillies starter Ranger Suarez has posted below average numbers this season, with an earned run average (ERA) of 4.43 ERA, a WHIP (walks+hits allowed/innings pitched) of 1.51, and a fielding independent mark (FIP) of 4.26, which suggests that he’s not really been the victim of many bad breaks, and that this is his true talent. That he’s walked 29 in 65 innings while striking out just 54 is also not terribly encouraging, especially against a Padres lineup that comes into the game 5th in MLB in walks.
The Padres, meanwhile, despite losing superstar third baseman Manny Machado to an ankle injury on Sunday, have won their last three, and, like their guests have posted an excellent mark (14-6) over their last 20 games. As mentioned above, taking the mound for the Padres on Thursday is Joe Musgrove, who’s not only posted a superficially impressive 8-0 record to start the season and produced a quality start (3 or fewer earned runs over 6 innings) in each of his 12 trips to the pitcher’s mound, he’s yet to allow more than two runs in a start, has struck out 81 batters in 79 innings, and has an ERA of just 1.59, with a microscopic 0.92 WHIP.
Compounding issues for the Phillies (or lifting your spirits, if you’re backing the Padres) is the fact that San Diego has nit left-handed pitching very well this season, with rankings of 8th and 9th in wRC+ and wOBA. Add it all up and even without Machado, the Padres should have plenty of opportunities against what might be a regressing Phillies team that’s trotting out an at-best mediocre starting pitcher.
