Peru vs Venezuela build-up & previous line-ups:
It’s been a rough start for Peru in the race to reach Qatar 2022 as they come into matchday eight of the CONMEBOL qualifiers with just one win under their belt. That sole victory for Los Incas came at Ecuador in June when they ran out 1-2 winners. It subsequently ended a four-game losing streak albeit during that run Peru faced South American giants Argentina and Brazil. Despite these struggles they find themselves four points behind Colombia who currently occupies fifth spot which guarantees advancement to an inter-confederation play-off.
Just one position below Peru in the standings heading into the eighth round of CONMEBOL qualifiers is Venezuela who have won the amount of matches as their upcoming opponents — 2-1 v Chile in November 2020 — but have tasted one more defeat. Leonardo González’s men come into this fixture looking to end a three-game winless run and last time out against Argentina at home they were humbled 1-3 a game that saw them end with ten men after Adrián Martínez received his marching orders just after the half hour mark.

Player to watch: Paolo Guerrero (Peru)
There’s no question Paolo Guerrero played a pivotal role in Peru reaching the 2018 World Cup finals, when he netted five goals across 13 appearances, their first since 1982 and he’ll undoubtedly be tasked with getting The Incas into next year’s edition now that he’s back available following his recovery from a serious knee injury. Guerrero in three WCQ matches played so far hasn’t found the net but last time out against Uruguay he assisted Renato Tapia to break the deadlock but Peru couldn’t hold on as Giorgian de Arrascaeta would soon equalise and the game subsequently ended in a 1-1 stalemate. The former Bayern Munich man is his nation’s all-time leading scorer with 28 goals and by featuring against Venezuela he will match Héctor Chumpitaz’s total caps of 105 which should place him third on their historic standings.
