Peru vs Paraguay build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
Despite winning the title on just two occasions, Peru have a wonderful recent record in this tournament, reaching at least the semi-final in three of the last four editions and losing to Brazil in the final back in 2019. And La Blanquirroja enjoyed a drama-free progression through this year’s group stage, taking seven points from their final three games after losing the opener 4-0 to Brazil.
Paraguay didn’t quite enjoy the same simple ride to the knockout rounds, losing 1-0 to both Argentina and, last time out, Uruguay. Even so, wins over Bolivia (3-1) and Chile (2-0) will fill Los Guaraníes with confidence that they can beat Peru for the first time since November 2014 — a run spanning seven games and six defeats.
- Peru (vs Venezuela): Gallese; Corzo, Araujo, Callens*, Trauco; Tapia, Yotun; Carrillo, Pena, Cueva; Lapadula.
- Paraguay (vs Uruguay): Silva; Espinola, Rojas, Alonso, Alderete; Samudio, Gimenez, Villasanti, Romero; Almiron, Avalos.
Centre-back Alexander Callens will miss the rest of the tournament after picking up an injury against Venezuela. As for Paraguay, they’ll be sweating on the fitness of Miguel Almiron after he limped out of the defeat to Uruguay looking visibly distressed.

Players to watch: Andre Carrillo (Peru)
After scoring the winner against Venezuela last time out, only Lionel Messi (3) has netted more than Andre Carrillo’s two goals at the 2021 Copa America so far. That Carrillo has been Peru’s talisman at this tournament shouldn’t be surprising given five of the forward’s 11 international goals have come in his last 10 caps since the start of 2020.
Carrillo will look to use his pace and dribbling skills to keep Peru on the front foot against Paraguay on Friday and with the opposition boasting the second-best defensive record at the tournament so far — conceding just three goals — Ricardo Gareca is going to lean heavily on those attacking qualities.
