Pep Guardiola: Now I’m older, maybe I’ll stay at Man City for longer

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has hinted that he is open to staying at the Etihad beyond 2021.

The 48-year-old Spanish tactician joined the Premier League outfit in 2016 and has 18 months left on his current deal.

Since taking charge, the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss has lifted two league titles with his second part of a historic domestic treble.

Under Guardiola’s stewardship, City has become the first English club to accumulate 100 points in a top-flight season, but they’ve yet to crack the Champions League code.

This campaign, if they manage to overhaul Liverpool, will see them match neighbours and city rivals Manchester United by winning three consecutive Premier League crowns.

During his time in Spain and Germany the Catalan coach was renowned for signing one-year deals but, now that he’s approaching his 50th birthday, Guardiola has admitted he’s adopted a new perspective.

“It depends on results, after five years, we’ll see what happens. I’m open to it, yes. I’m so comfortable here,” he told reporters when asked if he’s open to staying longer at Man City.

“It’s not the same a manager five years as two, everyone is fresh after two. I speak for myself and I want to see my players, the environment, it’s not as simple as seeing the players, how we work together, that’s the most important thing.

“We have to feel we can still do it together, enjoy it together, when I feel that’s not the case then we’ll talk to the club. I’m older and I have already [managed in] three incredible leagues. It’s different, now I’m more experienced, maybe with the experience I have now I would stay.

“Still I have 18 months, that’s a lot of time in football, that’s why the club and myself agree, we play tomorrow, do our best and after that we see how everything goes. I trust a lot the club and they trust me. The rest will decide.”
