Parma vs Inter Milan build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
If Inter are riding the crest of a wave at the top, the exact opposite can be said of Parma, who are now winless since November and circling the drain. Roberto D’Aversa was reinstated in January, but even he has not been able to abate Parma’s current free fall. They are currently 19th and six points from safety. If they don’t start picking up points soon, The Crusaders can wave goodbye to their top-flight status.
By contrast, Conte’s fortunes have been poles apart from his compatriot in northern Italy. His Inter side have been relentless in their pursuit of the Scudetto. On only three other occasions have Inter gained at least 56 points after 24 Serie A games (in the three-point era). They won the title during each of those seasons (2006/07, 2007/08, 2008/09).
- Parma (vs Spezia): Sepe; Conti, Osorio, Gagliolo, Pezzella; Kurtic, Hernani, Kucka; Karamoh, Mihaila, Brunetta.
- Inter Milan (vs Genoa): Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Bastoni; Darmian, Barella, Brozovic, Eriksen, Perisic; Lukaku, Martinez.
For Parma, experienced duo Graziano Pelle (yet to play a game) and Gervinho are currently sidelined, as are Joshua Zirkzee, Roberto Inglese and Hans Nicolussi. Conte’s only injury concern is that to Stefano Sensi.
Players to watch:
- Parma: You get the feeling that once Graziano Pelle, Gervinho and promising Bayern loanee Joshua Zirkzee return from injury, D’Aversa’s side will pose a much greater threat going forward. The problem for Parma this season has been consistency (or a lack of). They have used the most players in Serie A this campaign (36), while Inter have used the fewest so far (22). One player who has battled through this policy of consistent rotation has been Juraj Kucka. A pillar of quite ironic consistency in Parma’s midfield, the 34-year-old could offer Parma a guard rail from the fateful drop if he continues to impress with his tenacious performances and tackle-heavy exploits. He cannot do it alone, but Kucka is doing his job superbly nonetheless, making more tackles than any Parma player this term (53), creating the second-most chances (15) and completing the second-most short passes (592).
- Inter Milan: Alessandro Bastoni reached a milestone in recent weeks: he is the only outfield player since 2018/19 born after 1/1/1999 to have made at least 20 appearances in each of the last three Serie A campaigns. The burgeoning centre-back has made 21 appearances for Conte’s side this term, which followed on from his impressive maiden campaign in the senior Inter team last season (25 appearances), and of course that fruitful loan spell at Parma in 2018/19, a season in which he truly announced himself to Italian football. The three-cap international boasts great height and physicality, but his towering frame somewhat belies his ability on the ball, with the 21-year-old very comfortable in possession and an excellent distributor from the back. Parma know all about Bastoni’s credentials, but are in for a tough evening if he is in the mood to inflict further woe on his former club.
