Napoli will be looking to build momentum for the Champions League knockout rounds when they travel to face Parma on Wednesday at 6:30 PM.
Gennaro Gattuso’s men can no longer qualify for the Champions League through Serie A and are unable to catch fourth-placed Lazio with four games left to play. Napoli are also already guaranteed a Europa League group stage spot for next season thanks to their Coppa Italia win and, therefore, have nothing at stake in the league. Instead, they will be looking to build a positive run of results to keep morale high ahead of their Champions League last-16 second leg against Barcelona next month.
Their opponents Parma also have little to play for in the remainder of the campaign, 11 points clear of relegation and 16 behind the final European spot. Relegation is still mathematically possible, but improbable with just four games remaining and four other teams in more danger of the drop. But that doesn’t mean Napoli should take Parma lightly, especially given that they lost the last meeting between these two sides 2-1 in November.

Parma & Napoli’s previous line-ups:
- Parma (vs Sampdoria): Sepe; Laurini, Iacoponi, Gagliolo, Pezzella; Hernani, Brugman, Kurtic; Kulusevski, Caprari, Gervinho.
- Napoli (vs Udinese): Ospina; Hysaj, Manolas, Koulibaly, Rui; Fabian, Lobotka, Zielinksi; Callejon, Mertens*, Insigne.
Dries Mertens is a doubt for the trip to Parma after coming off with a knock to the back in the win over Udinese at the weekend, but usual replacement Arkadiusz Milik is suspended. Giovanni Di Lorenzo will be back for Napoli after suspension.
Player to watch:
With both Mertens and Milik missing, Napoli’s goalscoring burden will likely fall on the shoulders of Lorenzo Insigne.
The Napoli captain has been a constant under both Carlo Ancelotti and Gattuso this season, often featuring in his favoured position on the wing. However, he has featured through the centre on a few occasions and given that he is Napoli’s third-highest scorer, after Milik and Mertens, Insigne should be the one Gattuso turns to in midweek.
Insigne, 29, has scored six goals in 33 Serie A games this season joining Milik and Mertens as the only three Napoli players to have managed more than five. That alone will not spread confidence among Napoli’s fans, but the Italian has also recorded six assists, which should allow him to link up with his attacking teammates from a central position. Circumstances could see Insigne joined in the centre should Gattuso wish to experiment with a 4-4-2 as Ancelotti did, which may boost Napoli’s chances of hurting Parma’s defence.
Scoreline prediction: Parma 1-1 Napoli
