Panathinaikos and Olympiacos meet for an all-Greek derby in the EuroLeague on Friday night, with the hosts looking to bounce back from defeat to reigning champions Anadolu Efes last time and push up the table, while Georgios Bartzokas’ travelling Thrylos are aiming to consolidate their position in top eight.
Dejan Radonjic’s side are currently caught in the riptide of a three-game losing run, coming up short against Valencia Basket, Barcelona and most recently Anadolu Efes, which has just left The Shamrock scampering precariously in 13th with a concerning 6-9 record. This “Derby of the eternal enemies” thus takes on an even bigger significance if they are to recover their season.
Bartzokas has Olympiacos firing in the play-off positions, but he will be wary of complacency creeping in having just lost 86-90 to Crvena zvezda, which followed on from defeat to LDLC ASVEL earlier this month. It’s a concerning run the Piraeus-based side will be hoping to arrest, and what better way to end a losing run than by coming out on top in a derby match.
This is a contest shrouded in years of bad blood, and the spark will be set ablaze once more when they get to work at the Olympic Indoor Hall on Friday night.
