Our recommended Uruguay bet for World Cup 2022

Uruguay have reached at least the quarter-finals in two of their last three World Cup appearances.

La Celeste narrowly lost out to the Netherlands in the 2010 semi-finals, while they were beaten by eventual champions France four years ago.

Although, it is difficult to realistically see them challenging for a third title.

Group stage fixtures

Fixture Stadium Date*
vs South Korea Education City Stadium 13:00, 24/11
vs Portugal Lusail Iconic Stadium 19:00, 28/11
vs Ghana Al Janoub Stadium 15:00, 02/12

Uruguay are likely to be battling it with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal for top spot in Group H.

Indeed, their showdown on November 28 could go a long way to determining who will finish at the summit.

Although, La Celeste certainly cannot afford to take anything for granted against South Korea or Ghana.

Who could Uruguay meet in the knockout rounds?

Should they top Group H, Uruguay could face a potentially favourable last-16 draw against the runner-ups of Group G.

That is likely to be Switzerland with Brazil leading the way, but things will not get any easier from there.

Potentially quarter-final opponents Belgium are desperate to finally land major silverware, while the small matter of reigning champions France or five-time winners Brazil could be waiting further down the line.

If Uruguay win Group H Potential opponent
Round of 16 Switzerland
Quarter-Final Belgium
Semi-Final France
Final Brazil

Finishing second in Group H would likely bring the bigger tests sooner than Uruguay would want. Indeed, a potential round-of-16 meeting with Brazil could be on the cards.

And things would not get any easier thereon, with 2010 champions potentially awaiting in the quarter-finals, before the likes of Argentina and France could be waiting further down the line.

If Uruguay come runners up in Group H Potential opponent
Round of 16 Brazil
Quarter-Final Spain
Semi-Final Argentina
Final France

Uruguay players to watch at this year’s World Cup 2022

Uruguay top World Cup Golden Boot contender — Darwin Nunez

The Liverpool striker is set to make his maiden appearance at the World Cup finals.

And with youth on his side, the 23-year-old could well be trusted to lead the line ahead of the ageing Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani.

The former Benfica forward is yet to truly underline his quality at Anfield, but this is a great opportunity to showcase it on the biggest stage of all.

Uruguay player to watch — Luis Suarez

Though now in his mid-30s, Suarez has never lost that killer instinct and eye for goal.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward is set for his fourth appearance at the finals, where he has scored seven times.

Just two more strikes in Qatar would see him become his nation’s all-time leading scorer at the tournament.

Uruguay emerging player to look out for — Federico Valverde

Although named in the preliminary 26-man squad, Valverde missed the cut in Russia four years ago.

That is highly unlikely to be the case this time around, with the 24-year-old now firmly established in the Real Madrid midfield.

Having already won La Liga and the Champions League this year, he would love to end 2022 with an impressive World Cup to match.

Uruguay tactical analysis & likely formation at the World Cup

Diego Alonso has regularly rotated his system in recent times, though he generally prefers to operate with a lone striker.

He has some decent options at his disposal in Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani and Darwin Nunez, so he could opt to go with two up top instead.

Veteran Diego Godin will likely anchor the defence, while Federico Valverde will provide refreshing energy to a generally ageing squad.
