Who are the favourites to win the African Cup of Nations?
And then there were two. Senegal have booked their place in the final, making it three wins from three in the group stages on Wednesday by overcoming Burkina Faso 3-1 thanks in no small part to Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, who scored the third of the Lions of Teranga’s goals in that win.
Aliou Cissé’s men are unbeaten in their last 12 and you have to go back 16 matches for their last defeat in regular time. If they were to win it would be the very first time with a best finish of runners up (twice) once in 2019 and then in 2002.
Their Sunday night final opponents are Egypt, who have progressed through to this stage despite drawing all three of their knock-out stage games in normal time, beating Ivory Coast and Cameroon on penalties either side of an extra-time victory over Morocco.
The final will hold a particular interest for Liverpool fans as not only will Mane be in action, but he’ll also face his Reds team-mate as Mohamed Salah is the star man for the Pharaos and will carry the expectation of being the difference-maker for his side.
AFCON Top Goalscorer odds
The top goalscorer race seems to be over at the Africa Cup of Nations as we head into the final. Vincent Aboubakar and Karl Toto Ekambi are the only two in with a real chance of lifting the gong, with the former on six goals and the latter on five with the third place play-off match to be played on Saturday evening.
The bookmakers aren’t taking bets on any other players at this stage with only Sadio Mane with three goals standing any chance of racking up the goals in the final to trouble the two Cameroonians, but even that seems unlikely as he’d need to score a hat-trick as a minimum to catch Aboubakar.
