After battling from a set down to beat French minnow Terence Atmane 2-1 in the opening round, Nishioka has looked far more comfortable since, beating both Lloyd Harris of South Africa and Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets — the latter a particularly impressive result given the German’s ATP ranking of 23rd. Those three victories have helped balance out what has been a tough year for the Japanese player — ranked 46th in the world — taking his record to 17 wins and 17 defeats this year, including an 11-11 return on hard court.

Karatsev, meanwhile, has also enjoyed a strong run at the Zhuhai Championships so far, pulling off a trio of giant killings. The Russian had already seen off Matteo Arnaldi and Andy Murray — who are both ranked inside the top 50 of the ATP rankings — in 2-1 victories, coming from a set down to win each match. But then he topped it off by beating a second Brit in Cameron Norrie — ranked 17th in the world — in straight sets. Overall this year, Karatsev has 28 wins from 46 matches, enjoying a 9-7 hard court record along the way. Given his momentum, he’ll be more than a match for Nishioka.

This will be the second meeting between these two players, with Nishioka winning the previous one in straight sets in Paris last year.

Prediction: Nishioka in three sets
