Venus Williams continues her return to tennis in the first round of the Canadian Open, looking to build some fitness ahead of the US Open, with some speculating that could be the final tournament of her career. Following on from last year’s US Open, Williams started 2023 at the ASB Classic in New Zealand but look a long break, returning for the grass season and the build up to Wimbledon.
Williams won just one of her four matches on grass, beating Camilia Giorgi in the first round at the Rothesay Classic in Birmingham, with a first-round exit to Elina Svitolina at Wimbledon. There was another first-round exit last time out, with Williams beaten by Madison Keys at the Canadian Open. Williams hasn’t fared well in Cincinnati either of late, losing in the first round in each of her previous two appearances, with her best run being a semi-final exit in 2012.
Looking to add another first-round defeat for Williams is Veronika Kudermetova, who comes into this match as the 16th seed, and world no.14. Unlike Williams, Kudermetova wasn’t in action in Canada but she has had some good runs on the tour this year. Kudermetova opened the year with a decent performance at the Adelaide International 2, reaching the semi-finals with a victory over Victoria Azarenka along the way.
The 26-year-old also reached the semi-final of the Madrid Open, only losing to Iga Swiatek (having beaten Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals), as well as the semi-final of the Italian Open, where she lost to Anhelina Kalinina. But, in her last tournament at Wimbledon, Kudermetova only made it to the second round before losing to Marketa Vondrousova, though she would go on to win the tournament.
