The Serbian made light work of the Frenchman, winning 6-3, 6-2 in just over an hour as he continues his preparations for the US Open in his first tournament since he lost in the final to current world number one Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon.

Djokovic, who last won this tournament in 2020, has had just under two hours on court since he missed the Canadian Open due to fatigue, after his opening match in Cincinnati was cut short after Alejanadro Davidovich Fokina withdrew due to injury after the first set in round two.

Taylor Fritz, meanwhile, is yet to lose a set at the tournament after 2-0 wins against Jiri Lehecka and Lorenzo Sonego and a walkover against another Serbian in Dusan Lajovic in round three, who withdrew through injury having being 5-0 down in the first set. The American has stepped up his game once more after a disappointing showing in Toronto saw him exit the competition in round two to Alex De Minaur, having taken home the trophy in Atlanta at the end of July.
