Brit Jodie Burrage gets her Australian Open journey underway on Sunday, making her debut in the main draw of the tournament. The 24-year-old has previously entered the Australian Open twice, but in 2022 she fell at the first round of qualifying, before making it to the third qualifying round last year.
Just her fifth appearance at a Grand Slam main draw, Burrage earned her spot after breaking into the top 100 for the first time in the latter stages of 2024, also rising to be the British No.2 after Katie Boulter. In preparation for the Australian Open, Burrage has played two tournaments this year, losing in the second round of the Canberra International before falling in qualifying of the Hobart International.
It’s a tough test for Barrage in her first match, facing Tamara Korpatsch who is eight places above her in the WTA world rankings. Korpatsch is in the main draw of the Australian Open for the second time, having fallen in the first round last year, beaten in straight sets by Emma Raducanu.
However, there was success for the German last year as she won her maiden WTA title, claiming the Transylvania Open in October — a WTA 250 tournament. Korpatsch has also played two tournaments so far this year, beaten by Naomi Osaka in the first round of the Brisbane International, before losing in qualifying at the Adelaide International.
