We’re into the the second round of matches of the 2023 ATP Finals, and Stefanos Tsitsipas will be hoping he can keep his hopes for a semi-final berth alive. The Greek star won the ATP Finals in 2019 but has exited at the round robin stage in each of the past three tournaments. It’s been a decent year for Tsitsipas, who reached the Australian Open final and quarter-finals of the French Open as well as the semi-finals in two ATP 1000 tournaments.

However, Tsitsipas opened the 2023 ATP Finals against fourth seed Jannik Sinner and was pretty comfortably beaten, losing 6-4, 6-4 in less than 90 minutes. Tsitsipas was particularly week on the return, winning just 10 of his 51 potential return points, including only four on the first serve return.

Holger Rune is one of the two players making their ATP Finals debut this year, capping off what has been a fine 2023 for the 20-year-old. After ending 2022 with a win at the Paris Masters, Rune added two more ATP 1000 final appearances this year, finishing as a runner-up in Monte-Carlo and Italy. The Dane also reached the quarter-finals of the French Open and Wimbledon, which aided his climb to the top eight.

Rune had a tough start to the ATP Finals, drawn against Novak Djokovic — the joint-most success player in the tournament’s history. Despite his 7-6(4), 6-7(1), 6-3, defeat, Rune received a lot of plaudits for his performance, with an astonishing 18 aces and just five fewer points won than Djokovic.

Prediction: Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets
