Andrey Rublev won a thrilling five-setter against world number ten Alex de Minaur, extending his perfect 8-0 start to the season. The match was fiercely contested in front of a patriotic home crowd at the Australian Open on Sunday night. Rublev ended his five-match losing streak against Top 10 opponents and will aim to reach his first Grand Slam semi-final when he faces fourth seed Jannik Sinner.

In a thrilling encounter at the year’s first major, Rublev faced the risk of being eliminated after losing a dramatic third-set tie-break. However, he made a remarkable comeback by breaking the Australian’s opening service games in the fourth and fifth sets. Ultimately, Rublev secured his 300th match win in a marathon battle that lasted four hours and 14 minutes, with a final scoreline of 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-0.

“I started to feel a little bit of pain but that’s normal after four hours with intensity,” he said. “I just tried not to think about it and to push myself. I told myself, ‘Don’t cry, don’t feel sorry for yourself, just keep fighting’.”

Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner defeated Karen Khachanov in straight sets, proving his potential to win the Australian Open title.

“It was for sure a different match today,” Sinner said. “I felt like we both were hitting the ball really well from the back of the court. Every match is obviously different. It’s a pleasure to be here [in the quarter-finals]. Obviously happy with the outcome of the match.”
