Carlos Alcaraz gets his 2024 Australian Open campaign underway with what could be a tricky first match. The world no.2 missed the Australian Open last year due to injury, and many will have tipped him to do well. Instead, his best showing at the tournament remains a third-round exit in 2022.

Last year was still a good one for Alcaraz, who reached at least the semi-finals of the three Grand Slams in which he did compete, winning Wimbledon. He also reached the semi-finals at the ATP Finals, where he was beaten by Novak Djokovic, which was his most recent tournament, passing on the pre-Australian Open shows.

Standing in his way is a veteran. Richard Gasquet has been playing at the Australian Open since 2003, making his debut at the tournament before Alcaraz was even born. But the Frenchman hasn’t had the best of luck in Australia, with it being the only Grand Slam in which he hasn’t reached the quarter-finals in his long career.

Gasquet has also fallen at the early hurdles in each of his past two Australian Open showings, after a three-year absence. Last year he lost in the first round and also fell at that stage in all four Grand Slams. He has also played two tournaments already this year, losing in the quarter-finals of the Open Nouvelle-Calédonie, and the first round of the ASB Classic.
