Real Madrid are the runaway leaders of the EuroLeague table this season, two wins clear of second-placed Barcelona. The Spanish side are the defending champions having beat Olympiacos in last season’s final and it looked like they could genuinely go into 2024 still perfect in EuroLeague. Unfortunately, that run was stopped after 11 games, with Fenerbahce taking a thrilling 100-99 win in overtime having come from eight points down in normal time.

So, how would Real Madrid respond to their first EuroLeague defeat of the season? Would it rock them? The answer was no. In their very next game they beat Olympiacos and then won 90-78 against Panathinaikos to keep hold of their lead at the top of the table — though of course there is still a long way to go until the playoff spots are confirmed.

Hoping to add a second loss this week are Bayern Munich, who will also be eyeing up a play-in or playoff spot. The German side are currently 13th but are part of a eight-team mini group separated by just one win. Unfortunately for Bayern, they are one of the teams playing catchup with a record of 6-7, also hampered at the moment by points difference — though head-to-head will be the first tiebreaker once all games are played.

Bayern’s position and record comes as a result of their good recent run of form having started the season terribly. Two wins in their opening three games was great, but Bayern then went on to lose four in a row, leaving them with a record of 2-5 after seven games. But they have now won four of their past six, only losing to Zalgiris and Olympiacos, the latter a 77-69 defeat last time out.
