It’s already time for a basketball Clasico in EuroLeague and this is promising to be a big one. After four games of the 2023/24 season, there are just two teams left unbeaten in EuroLeague and they meet at the WiZink Center on Thursday. Real Madrid are the hosts and the defending EuroLeague champions, having beaten Olympiacos in last season’s final.

They beat Barcelona in the semi-finals en route to that victory, despite having finished one place below their rivals in the regular season table. Real Madrid faced another Spanish team to start the new campaign, beating Baskonia 79-77 on the road. They followed that up with a 23-point victory over Anadolu Efes, again on the road. There were then two home games with the same result as Real Madrid beat Zalgiris and Olimpia Milano, the latter 88-71.

But sitting just above Real Madrid at the top of the early table are Barcelona. After finishing second in last season’s league section, Barcelona beat Zalgiris in the playoffs before losing in the one-off semi-final against Real Madrid.

This season has started well, though. Barcelona’s perfect start opened with a 91-74 win over Anadolu Efes and then saw them beat last season’s runners-up Olympiacos. Another victory over Partizan followed, in front of a record crowd in Serbia, before Barcelona recorded the biggest win of the season so far, beating Bayern Munich 98-59.

Real Madrid have won both of the last two head-to-head matches between the two sides, having lost each of the previous three before that. They followed up a 90-80 victory in the Super Copa semi-finals in September, with a 86-79 win in Liga ACB at the beginning of this month and are looking for three consecutive victories over their rivals for the first time since November 2019.
