Rafael Nadal continues his return to tennis with a quarter-final appearance at the Brisbane International. The Spaniard had been out of action for almost a year due to injury picked up in last year’s Australian Open, and has hinted that this could be the final year of his career. During his injury, Nadal dropped off the face of the rankings, and is currently 672nd in the world, relying on a wildcard to enter the Brisbane International.

In the first round in Bisbane, Nadal went up against qualifier Dominic Thiem, a tough opponent for his return to tennis but the Austrian was dispatched in two sets. There was another two-set victory in the second round, this time a slightly more comfortable 6-1, 6-2 win over Australian Jason Kubler.

Hoping to end Nadal’s party in the quarter-finals is another Australian, Jordan Thompson. The 29-year-old has already faced Nadal this year and at this tournament, knocking the Spaniard and compatriot Marc Lopez out of the first round of the doubles alongside Max Purcell.

Thompson and Purcell have reached the semi-finals on that side of the tournament, so the Australian will be hoping for another appearance in the final four as a single participant — perhaps even going all the way in singles and doubles. In the first round, Thompson beat fellow Australian Aleksandar Vukic in straight sets before being awarded a walkover victory against fourth seed Ugo Humbert, who had to pull out due to illness.

Prediction: Rafael Nadal in straight sets
