We’re only a few weeks into the 2023/24 EuroLeague season, but fans are already being treated to a Belgrade derby. Partizan vs Crvena zvezda is a match-up like no other, with the atmosphere unrivalled in basketball — it wouldn’t look out of a place in a football match between the respective sides. Unfortunately, neither Partizan nor Crvena zvezda have had the greatest of starts to the new campaign.
Hosts of this game, Partizan have won just one of their opening four games, sitting 14th in the early table. After making it to the playoffs last season — where they lost a 2-0 series lead to fall 3-2 to Real Madrid — Partizan opened the new campaign with a 96-81 defeat to Maccabi Tel Aviv. They did bounce back in their next game though, beating LDLC ASVEL 88-62 in what is the biggest away victory of the season so far.
Unfortunately, Partizan haven’t been able to build on that victory. They returned to losing ways with a 92-83 defeat to Barcelona and were then beaten in overtime by Olympiacos, having taken a 10-point lead into the final quarter.
Crvena zvezda are one place above Partizan in the table but hold an identical record of one win and three losses so far — only above their rivals on points difference, though that will not be relevant once head-to-head tiebreakers kick in. Unlike Partizan, Crvena zvezda opened the season with a win, beating LDLC ASVEL by 21 points.
However, they haven’t been able to build on that, with three straight defeats since. The run started with a defeat to Zalgiris, and Crvena zvezda have since lost to AS Monaco and Virtus Bologna, yet to taste victory on the road.
These two teams have been evenly matched in the previous 10 head-to-head clashes, with both sides winning five matches apiece. It was Partizan who took the spoils last time out however, with a 96-85 victory to earn themselves a 3-2 play-off series victory over their rivals in the ABA league.
