Novak Djokovic starts the defence of his Australian Open title on Sunday, as he also looks to continue his domination of this tournament. The Serbian has won the Australian Open more times than any other player, in both the Amateur and Open eras, sitting four ahead of his closest rivals. Last year’s success was Djokovic’s 10th in total, and fourth in a row, though there was a different winner in 2022 as he did not take part. The last person to beat Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open was Chung Hyeong, in the 2018, when the Serb was the 14th seed.
The win last year also set Djokovic up for a great 2023 in which he consolidated his spot as the world no.1, also winning the French Open and US Open, while reaching the final at Wimbledon. There was also success at the ATP Finals for Djokovic, who opened this year representing Serbia at the United Cup, losing in the quarter-finals to Australia.
It’s a daunting task for world no.178 and qualifier Dino Prizmic, making it to the main draw of a Grand Slam for the first time. The 18-year-old is a Junior Grand Slam winner, beating Juan Carlos Prado Angelo at the Junior French Open last year, while he was also part of Croatia’s Davis Cup squad.
Starting the year with a second-round exit at the Canberra Challenger, Primic was unseeded in qualifying for the Australian Open. But, after dropping the first set in his match against Mariano Navone, Prizmic won six straight sets against the Argentinian, as well as Duje Ajdukovic and Aziz Dougaz to qualify for the main draw.
Prediction: Novak Djokovic in straight sets
