Djokovic cruised through his opening tie against Argentine Tomas Martin Etcheverry, winning 6-3, 6-2. However, things got a little more challenging in the next round as the Serbian had to come from a set down to beat Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands, before a hard-fought 2-1 win over defending champion Holger Rune — who beat him in last year’s final — last time out. Nevertheless, Djokovic has now extended his winning run to 16 matches since losing the Wimbledon final, in a sequence that has seen him win the US Open and Cincinnati Open titles.
As for Rublev, he’s seen off Yoshihito Nishioka and Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets before roaring back from a set down to beat Australian Alex De Minaur 2-1, with his two sets won 6-3 and 6-1. Rublev has now won 56 of his 78 matches in 2023, including six of nine on indoor hard.
This will be the sixth meeting between these two players, with Djokovic holding a 4-1 head-to-head advantage.
Awaiting the winner of this match in the final is Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, who beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 2-1 earlier on Saturday.
