In the second round of Group D fixtures at the 2023 Davis Cup, it’s the battle between the two unbeaten nations. The top two of each group goes into November’s quarter-finals, so the winner here will all-but book their spot.
The United States team includes two of the top 15 singles players and two of the top five doubles, putting them in a good position. Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul and Mackenzie McDonald are joined by world doubles no.1 Austin Krajicek and no.5 Rajeev Ram.
In the first match of their tie against Croatia, McDonald beat Dino Prizmic in two sets, but Tiafoe was beaten by Borna Gojo to tie things up. But the pairing of Krajicek and Ram got the job done in the doubles match, beating Ivan Dodig and Mate Pavic in three sets.
Netherlands, meanwhile, have Tallon Griekspoor, Botic van de Zandschulp and Gijs Brouwer to call on for their singles matches. The doubles pairing will be world no.4 Wesley Koolhof, and Matwe Middelkoop, who is world no.34.
The Dutch had to come from behind in their opening tie against Finland, with Van de Zandschulp losing in the first match to Otta Virtanen. But Griekspoor beat Emil Ruusuvuori in the second match to allow Kooholf and Middelkoop to secure the win with doubles victory over Harri Heliovaara and Patrik Niklas-Salminen.
