The 2023 US Open — the final Grand Slam of the tennis year — has reached the final stage on the men’s side, with Coco Gauff already claiming the women’s title.
This is the 143rd consecutive edition of the event at Flushing Meadows where 256 players — 128 in the men’s and women’s draws — dream of a fairy-tale in New York.
Carlos Alcaraz was the defending men’s champion after beating Casper Ruud in four sets last year, but he exited in the semi-finals after a loss to 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev, who is now ranked third in the world. Alcaraz himself will now lose top spot in the world rankings as well.
Novak Djokovic is the man to reclaim that particular crown in a great battle between the two this year. The Serb is back at the US Open after missing last year’s event and, fresh from winning the Western & Southern Open, is targeting his fourth triumph at Flushing Meadows. This year’s men’s final is a repeat of 2021, where Medvedev completed a stunning straight-sets victory over Djokovic. Will we see a shock repeat?
On the women’s side of the US Open, Iga Swiatek was the defending champion, beating Ons Jabuer in straight sets 12 months ago. Like last year, the top seed arrived in New York having already landed the French Open, and will have been eager to underline her recent dominance of the sport. However, a round-of-16 exit to 20th seed Jelena Ostapenko not only means that Swiatek cannot retain her crown, but she’s also lost the world no.1 spot after 75 weeks at the top.
Aryna Sabalenka will be the new world no.1 but had to settle for second place here, with home favourite and massive talent Coco Gauff claiming her first-ever Grand Slam title. It surely won’t be her last.
