Samsonova meanwhile, had to come from a set down against Katerina Siniakova in round one (4-6, 6-2, 6-3), before making light work of China’s Qinwen Zheng 6-3, 6-2 to set up this incredibly tough tie against the world number two.
This will be the third meeting between the pair in the last 12 months, with each winning one apiece. The previous match saw Sabalenka come out on top in straight sets, but it was a close-fought battle, with both sets finishing 7-6.
