The Brazilian climbed as high as 10th in the world in June as a result of her performances, which have seen Haddad Maia reach the semi-finals of the French Open and the quarter-finals of the Italian Open.
This is Haddad Maia’s second appearance at the Cincinnati Open, losing in the first round on debut last year, and she only made it to the second round of the Canadian Open last week, beaten by Leylah Fernandez. Karolina Muchova isn’t easy opposition, however, and is the toughest opponent Haddad Maia could have been drawn against in the first round. The Czech Republic star is the 17th best player in the world, so only just missed out on being seeded at the Cincinnati Open, which would have made this match impossible at this stage.
Last time out at the Canadian Open, Muchova made it to the third round before being beaten by Iga Swiatek, which was a minor improvement on her first-round exit at Wimbledon. Swiatek was once again a hurdle too far in the French Open as Muchova made it all the way to the final before losing to the Polish phenom, while she also made it to the quarter-finals in Dubai and Indian Wells.
