Coco Gauff’s search for a first ever Grand Slam win continues this week with the US Open quarter-finals. The American is a one-time finalist at Grand Slams, finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek in last year’s French Open. at the US Open, Gauff has equalled her best-ever run, also reaching the quarter-finals last year.
Some of the big names in women’s tennis have already dropped, with Gauff the second-highest seed still in the US Open and she’ll fancy her chances of a dream win. It was a rocky start to the tournament for Gauff, who had to come from a set down to beat qualifier Laura Siegemund in the first round. Mirra Andreeva and Elise Mertens were then beaten, the latter with another comeback, before Gauff ended Caroline Wozniacki’s dream return with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory.
Jelena Ostapenko, meanwhile, will be looking to add Gauff to her list of scalps. The Latvian is in unchartered territory at the US Open, only previously making it as far as the third round, and losing her first match last year. But this is the second quarter-final of the year for Ostapenko, who also made it to the final eight of the Australian Open before losing to Elena Rybakina.
Ostapenko’s US Open started with a three-set victory over Jasmine Paolini, and all of the Latvian’s matches have gone all the way this year. Elina Avanesyan and Bernarda Pera were next to fall, with Ostapenko having to come from behind against the latter. There was another comeback victory in the fourth round as Ostapenko took the biggest scalp of them all, beating soon-to-be former world No.1 Iga Swiatek 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
