The first round of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup is done and dusted and for co-hosts Japan the quest is now to finish as high as possible in the 17th-32nd classification round. Japan were placed in a group alongside Germany, Australia and Finland and lost their opening game to the former.
Japan bounced back in their very next game, with a narrow victory over Finland, which made their final match against Australia a straight shootout for a spot in the second round. But it ended in defeat for Japan and they now contest Group O alongside Finland, Cape Verde and Venezuela on the path to determine the bottom half of the tournament.
While Japan won one game in the initial group phase, Venezuela come into the 17th-32nd classification round without a victory. The South American nation were placed in Group F alongside Slovenia, Georgia and Cape Verde, opening with a 100-85 defeat to the former.
Venezuela’s hopes of winning the tournament were over after their second game, a 81-75 defeat to Cape Verde. And Group F was rounded off with a 70-59 defeat to Georgia. Hopes won’t be high for a good finish at this summer’s tournament.
