Jannik Sinner is the fourth seed of the tournament, and most of the big names are refusing to fall — the complete opposition of the women’s side of the tournament. Sinner is a one-time quarter-finalists at the Australian Open, reaching that stage in 2022 as part of a year in which he also hit the final eight at Wimbledon and the US Open.
Last year, he fell a round earlier, beaten in the fourth round and he’ll be hoping there isn’t a continuation of that regression. The Italian is yet to drop a set at the Australian Open, starting with a three-set victory over Botic van de Zandschulp. Last time out, it was a straightforward 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 win against qualifier Jesper de Jong.
Sebastian Baez, meanwhile, has already bettered his best ever run at the Australian Open. Making his debut at the tournament in 2022, Baez lost in the second round before falling a round earlier last year. In fact, Baez had only reached the third round of a Grand Slam once before, at the US Open last year.
The 26th seed for the tournament, Baez lost the first set in his opening match to JJ Wolf, but was leading 2-1 in sets and 3-0 up in the fourth set when the American had to retire. There was another dropped set in the second round, but Baez once again came through, beating Daniel Elahi Galan 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
