Italy are a one-time Davis Cup winner, taking the trophy in 1976 when they bested Chile. The Italians have returned to the final three times since without success, losing in 1979, 1980 and 1998. Hopes of replicating the past successes are high with Jannik Sinner the main man in their squad.
It’s been a breakout year for the 22-year-old who reached a first Grand Slam semi-final at Wimbledon before winning his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title in Canada. Sinner also made it to the final of the ATP Finals, only losing out to Novak Djokovic — who he had beat in the round robin stage.
Netherlands, meanwhile, come into the Final 8 having topped Group D posting wins over USA and Finland, only losing to hosts Croatia. The Dutch aren’t blessed with a rich Davis Cup history, enjoying their best run in 2001 when they reached the semi-finals.
Among the Dutch squad is Tallon Griekspoor, who has already faced off against Sinner this year, beating the Italian in Rotterdam in February. That matchup is set to be the second singles match in Thursday’s tie, which could be the decider for one of the two nations.
