While some teams are still fighting for their spot in the second round of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, Spain are going for a perfect record. The best-ranked side in the world, Spain have won both of their Group G matches so far and have already booked their spot in the next round.

Spain opened their tournament with a comprehensive 94-64 victory over Ivory Coast, winning every quarter, a real statement of intent for the favourites. Spain’s second win was slightly less convincing but the job was still done to seal their spot in the second round. Trailing after the first quarter, Spain also lost the third quarter but eventually ran out 96-78 winners over Brazil thanks to their 13-point advantage in the fourth quarter.

For Iran, this is farewell for their chances of winning the World Cup, as they cannot advance to the second round even if they shock the world. The signs of Iran’s potential struggles came very early as they were thrashed 100-59 by Brazil, but they made a fight of it in their second game. Iran went into the final quarter of their game against Ivory Coast in the lead but could not hold onto the advantage, eventually losing 71-69.

However, Iran’s tournament will not be over after this game as they enter Group P in the 17th-32nd classification round, set to play France, Lebanon and either Brazil or Ivory Coast.
