World no.1 Iga Swiatek gets her Australian Open underway, hoping to win the tournament for the first time. Despite dominating tennis over the past couple of years, the Australian Open continues to elude Swiatek. The Pole reached the semi-finals in 2022, her best run at the tournament, but exited at the fourth round last year.

It was the start of a less commanding period for Swiatek in which she *only* won the French Open, losing her spot as world no.1 to Aryna Sabalenka after the US Open. But Swiatek won it back before the year was up, thanks to her win at the WTA Finals in which she beat Sabalenka along the way. This year, Swiatek was part of Poland’s team at the United Cup, taking them to the final where they lost to Germany — though she won her singles match-up (losing in the mixed doubles alongside Hubert Hurkacz).

Hoping to end Swiatek’s latest Australian Open attempt at the first hurdle is a former winner. Sofia Kenin won the Australian Open in 2020, during a good year in which she also reached the final of the French Open, rising as high as fourth in the world. Unfortunately, she struggled for form and with injuries in the years since, dropping out of the top 200.

But Kenin is on her way back up, rising to 41 in the world, reaching the semi-finals of the Guadalajara Open, beating Jelena Ostapenko on the way. It is worth noting, though, that since winning the Australian Open in 2020, Kenin has lost in the second round once and first round twice.

Prediction: Iga Swiatek in straight sets
